On the Science of Learning for secondary English teachers
A post for residents of New South Wales, Australia
If you’re starting on your Science of Learning journey, this is the post for you. In partnership with Meaghan Hird at the Association of Independent Schools NSW, I am co-facilitating an event just for secondary English teachers. If you’re a lone ranger, starting out as I did by dabbling in a little EDI and a lot of professional reading, this could be the jump start you need to confidently apply what you know in the specific context of English. The course is part online, part in-person and very much grounded in practice. There is no prior knowledge required as we are going back to basics. Without spoiling the course, here’s a little of what we will cover:
What is the Science of Learning and how do we know these practices work?
What is the simple view of reading and what is Scarborough’s Reading Rope? Also, why should I care?
How can we understand what works in improving students’ comprehension?
How can ‘desirable difficulties’ benefit our students?
How does TAPPLE work in the secondary English classroom?
What makes a good check for understanding?
It sounds like a lot, and it is! You don’t need to be at an independent school to come along, it’s just a little cheaper. Secure your early-bird spot here. I’m looking forward to meeting you in person!
This looks like a great course! I wish I’d been able to do this before deciding to quit teaching in frustration :(
